V.J. Brooks has sold her paintings worldwide and is
an award-winning artist, appearing in one-woman
shows as well as juried group shows.
In high school, she began her lifetime career in art
by being presented with the Ford Foundation
Golden Key Award. Later, during her university
studies, Brooks became interested in Encaustic
painting. This is one of the older forms of painting
which was used in ancient Greece and Egypt
where some samples date back to the 14th century
B.C.
Brooks, who always likes challenges, taught herself
this method through trial and error, as there was no
recipe at the time. She made her own paint and
prepared her own boards. Encaustic is a form of
painting where beeswax is melted and painted on a
firm surface, then burned-in with a torch. This
burning-in process makes the wax more resistant to
heat and abrasion. Maintenance of encaustic
paintings is just a quick buff.
Later, Brooks met other encaustic painters and she
is now a member of Encaustic Network Unlimited.
While Brooks paints many different subjects,
flowers are her favorite.
Brooks has also perfected the process of making
mono prints from this form of painting, again
through trial and error.
A talented artist, she also enjoys silk painting and
jewelry making.
